Problems in Paradise?
Problems in Paradise? A Millennium, Boomer, or Geek I am not; although, I wouldn’t mind being any of these. I share this to justify my ignorance. I am a “Pre-Boomer” and the following is what I’ve recently learned (NOTE – This may not be news to most, but thought I’d share it anyway):
I recently experienced video but no audio on my blog links. I went to links that were on-line and experienced the same. My computer had sound. I could play CDs and sample music that was on my C drive ― so it wasn’t the computer. I went to my laptop to access the video/audio links on my blog and was met with the same negative experience. I should add that at this point my laptop is XP and my desktop is Vista. My laptop interjected the advice that it did not support my application, BUT it went on to state that I needed Internet Explorer 8, followed by asking if I wanted to install IE8. I did the upgrade. After that, for all video/audio links that I visited, the problem had gone away. I now had audio with the video on my laptop.
I concluded that something had changed rather recently in the ether world which caused me to lose my audio on both computers, and that there was the need to upgrade to IE8 to remediate this. As it turned out, for the laptop, I never had IE8 (duh!). Next step, put IE8 on my desktop, since apparently, I did not have it there, either. That process was going along well, when it was interrupted with the message that it was unable to continue, as I had a higher version of IE already on it. What was going on? Previous to all of this, my desktop with Vista had been working just fine. Then suddenly one day it wasn’t. If IE8 was on it, had been replaced by an IE9 (an immense improvement!!?), why was I getting less? I researched IE9 and learned that certain functions available on IE8 would no longer be available with IE9. Did I execute a deliberate upgrade to IE9? No I did not. It snuck in the when I wasn’t looking ― SO, uninstall IE9 and re-install IE8. Done. Now I have both video AND sound on my blog links, the links on the blogs of others, and on all on-line links. Since I am a Non-Geek Pre-Boomer, this took me several frustrating days to figure out. I may be one of the unwashed, but I now am back in business with the assistance of some mental chewing gum and piano wire.
Someday I may be able to fathom why a progressive product improvement would yield a regressive loss of highly functional key attributes ― but not today.
You can stop laughing now!
